Frequently Asked Questions

Q -
What is the difference between working and show line GSD’s?
A - There a basically 3 factions of GSD: the American show lines, the European show lines, and the European working lines. American show dogs are the ones you see at dog shows with the extreme slope to their back, over angulations & narrow heads. They have been bred exclusively for trotting around a show ring for many years. Most lack courage, agility and physical soundness. Their temperament has no bearing on whether they are breed worthy or not. European show lines are similar to the American show dogs. Their angles are not the same; they tend more towards a roached, short back. These dogs are where the money is, temperament and physical soundness are not the primary breeding goal, structure and the present beauty trend are. These animals obtain sport titles for breeding purposes, but are not held to the same standards as working dogs. Working lines are what we breed here at von der Polizei. These lines have been bred for 100 years to serve humans as working animals. They have high prey drive, high retrieving drive, high energy, and the courage and desire to protect their family. They are not for everyone. They need to do things like obedience, agility, schutzhund, police work or SAR. If they are to be a companion animal, they need a considerable amount of exercise. They are not couch potatoes. They are highly intelligent and if you don’t keep them entertained, they’ll entertain themselves (not a good thing).

Q - How much is it to ship a puppy by air?
A - $250 in the continental US, this includes the crate.

Q - Should I get one of your dogs as a pet?
A - Only if you can provide it with consistent hard exercise, a large fenced yard, and strong leadership.

Q - Are your dogs good with children?
A - Yes, mine are. Whether yours is or not depends on how you raise the pup. Lots of socialization with well behaved kids that are supervised and taught how to treat and respect an animal will produce a trustworthy GSD.

Q - How do you pick the right puppy for me?
A - Each litter is evaluated daily from birth. We look at drive levels, nerve stability, dominance, tractability and pack instinct. We try very hard to match each puppy to the type of home it’s going to, whether it be a police K9 home or an obedience/pet home. Color is secondary, though we try and accommodate you if we can. If your primary concern with your GSD puppy is color and not temperament, we suggest you go else where.

Q - How much do your puppies cost?
A - All puppies are currently priced at $1000.
