Schutzhund Training
In each episode we will select one or two dogs that serve as our main guides through the colorful world of purebreds. Through interviews with owners, trainers, judges, breeders and veterinarians, we will explore the development of a "top dog". In this episode of Breed All About It, we learn about the super dog Max Von Stehpanitz set out to create 100 years ago - the German Shepherd Dog. Known as the "dog for all reasons", the GSD excels in a number of activities. From sheep herding to tracking criminals to helping the disabled, the versatility of the GSD confirms its reputation as strong, fierce and extremely smart. We visit Ulf Kintzel, a native of Germany, who herds sheep with German Shepherd Dogs. We also observe Schutzhund training. At the training fields of our hosts David and Heidi Landau, we explain the exercises involving obedience, tracking and protection skills, and watch the dogs interact with professional "bad guys" known as agitators. In New Jersey we visit The Seeing Eye facility, where head trainer Peter Lang take us on a training excursion with a German Shepherd that has great potential as a leading eye dog. This product is manufactured on demand using DVD-R recordable media. This award-winning, stunningly crafted, soft cover, coffee table size photographic essay is the first and only photographic book that comprehensively depicts all phases of this popular working dog sport, including training, competitions, dogs at play and with their families, dog portraits and puppies. It features over 370 full color, large format photographs from 26 photographers. The purpose of this book is to introduce the sport to those who are unfamiliar with it and to honor Schutzhund dogs and their passionate trainers and handlers. We chose to create this book because dry prose summaries describing Schutzhund training do not capture its beauty, the bond between handlers and their dogs, nor the hard work, challenges and rewards of the sport. Inside are photographs and concise text that show what participants and observers will typically see in the sport. Schutzhund or Dog Sport involves three phases: tracking, obedience and protection work. For over 100 years it has been used to produce healthy, intelligent, strong and talented working dogs worldwide. Read the rest of this entry »
A paragraph from the text Dogs who are to be trained for police and hard surface tracking can start their tracking experience on hard surface rather than grass. TodayÂ’s dog trainer can trace the roots of modern training to Training Dogs by Colonel Konrad Most. Written in Germany in 1910, Training Dogs influenced how both dogs and trainers were taught in Europe and the United States for the next 50 years! It contains valuable and historically significant information. 21st century trainers and behaviorists will find it amazing to realized that early in the 20th century Konrad Most was using and applying behavioral training principles with dogs long before B.F. Skinner! Most also created systematic and scientific methods to teach trainers how to train the dog and his “theory of Training” is a classic in the field. While MostÂ’s methods may be viewed harsh by modern dog trainers, the theory behind it was revolutionary for itÂ’s time and still applied today. “We are in luck if, in training a dog, we can use his instincts as a basis for what we require. For the more instinctive an action is, the more reliable it will be.”-Konrad Most Here is what todayÂ’s dog trainers say about Training Dogs: “Most demonstrated an understanding of operant conditioning concepts such as primary and secondary reinforcement, shaping, fading and chaining 28 years before the publication of B.F. SkinnerÂ’s The Behavior of Organisms. He differentiated between primary and secondary reinforcers. He used his voice and soft tones as secondary inducements, much the way some trainers use clickers today.” Mary R. Burch and Jon S. Bailey, How Dogs Learn, 1999, Howell Book House, A Division of Hungry Minds, Inc. “Although some of MostÂ’s methods seem archaic and harsh in this enlightened age of positive training, some of the theory he set forth was years ahead of its time. Knowing where training came from helps us appreciate where we are today.” Sheila Booth, author of Purely Positive and co-author of Schutzhund Obedience Training In Drive. Read the rest of this entry »
