More than eleven hundred dogs served in Vietnam as part of the United States Armed Forces. Working alongside members of all branches of service, these canine soldiers filled vital roles in the campaign in Southeast Asia. Despite their numbers and heroics, the history of the dogs and the servicemen who worked with them is relatively unknown, even among the dog handlers themselves. Even before American troops were formally committed in Vietnam, military advisors to the region recognized the usefulness and importance of military working dogs. As early as 1960 American scout and sentry dogs were introduced in South Vietnam to assist the Army of the Republic of Vietnam in protecting their military installations as well as in searching for the Vietcong and soldiers of the North Vietnamese Army. Utilizing dogs that had been left behind by the French, U.S. Air Force personnel established the Army Republic of Vietnam dog program. Read the rest of this entry »
US Army Field Manual on CD in Adobe Acrobat (.PDF) format.
What's inside:
The last Army dog field manual (FM) was published in 1977. It reflected military working dog (MWD) doctrine developed during the Vietnam era. Although useful at that time, much of the information has since become obsolete. Today, MWD teams are employed in dynamic ways never before imagined.
Today's MWD team is a highly deployable capability that commanders have used around the world from Afghanistan to Africa and from the Balkans to Iraq. These specialized teams aid commanders in stability and support operations as well as in warfighting. Being modular and mobile makes these teams very agile. As situations dictate, MWD teams are quick to arrive and able to conduct various operations. Their versatility allows for effective transformation at all echelons among readiness for deployment and operations on the ground, through redeployment and back to readiness.
The highly aggressive dog tactics of the 1960s and 1970s are long gone. Today's MWD program effectively employs expertly trained and motivated handlers coupled with highly intelligent breeds of dogs. These teams are continuously rotating between their assigned duties and deployments worldwide to perform joint operations, multiechelon tasks, and interagency missions.
This FM addresses the current capabilities of the Military Police Working Dog Program as well as the potential for future applications. As technology and world situations change, the MWD team will continue the transformation process and give commanders the full-spectrum capabilities needed to be combat multipliers on the battlefield as well as persuasive force protection and antiterrorism assets.
This publication applies to the Active Army, the Army National Guard (ARNG)/the Army National Guard of the United States (ARNGUS), and the United States Army Reserve (USAR).

This manual is aimed at trainers and administrators in police service who are trying to build a solid explosive detecting K9 team. Ron Mistafa covers Canadian and US laws regarding possession of explosive materials and devices, criminal acts related to these and using a K9 team in fighting these crimes. The book will assist in building and training a K9 explosive detector team from the ground up. This book was written to help those departments who do not yet have an explosive detection dog, or who are not completely satisfied with their present system of training standards. The book is not the answer, but is more a series of helpful hints to set your unit on its way to more meaningful training and confidence. It places a lot of emphasis on effective and efficient training, which in turn produces very confident Detection Teams who search with high degrees of efficiency, effectiveness and safety. This book is designed for the experienced handler or trainer, but can be easily followed by the beginner as well. However, as with any dog unit aspect, always train with someone who has a lot of experience or is an expert, especially in explosive detection. Read the rest of this entry »
